Because who doesn’t love Sven?

We discovered this market a couple of years ago and decided a revisit was in order on Sunday. Leaving Vienna, our hoar-frosted drive through the Wiener Alpen created the proper mood.

And then. We realized with slight dismay that approximately two months have passed since we’d last spent any time in an alpine range. For shame.

The setting is a familiar one; we’ve hiked in and around Reichenau an der Rax more than once or twice.

Its restaurant is tucked into a couple of rooms of the Villa Wartholz garden pavilion, amongst the market offerings. Our table was in a cozy setting; and Tony settled into the big chair to study on the menu.

After lunch, a walk about the market. Alpine decorations for every taste and budget (though the stuffed deer head was regrettably not for sale).

Exquisitely carved wood pieces, and Imperial baubles for those wanting a touch of royalty on their tree, too.

Few visitors to this market can resist Sven the Singing Reindeer; there was even a small queue to take photos with him!

A basket of baubles and a pat on Sven’s snout later, it was time to head home.
